Earlier this year I posed this question to my peers attending Antler's winter residency, "How do I know if I'm actually speaking to the right person on the phone?" Prompted by some recent news articles highlighting the rise of scams involving AI powered deepfakes and voice cloning, I began my search which ended with more questions than answers. What I did find ranged from complex, automated technologies to a variety of public campaigns saying to just hang up the phone.
Phone scams are nothing new, but they've become increasingly sophisticated and difficult to detect. Even with advancements in technology, our ears remain our primary tool for verifying the identity of callers. However, the emergence of deepfakes and voice cloning has rendered even this sense unreliable. Bad actors can now steal familiar voices and mimic them with uncanny accuracy, making it nearly impossible to distinguish between a genuine caller and a scammer. Sadly, this means that we can no longer blindly trust our own ears and senses.
So it's time for a change. It's time to create useful technology that empowers you with the ability to validate the voice on the other side of the line and know with a degree of certainty who it really is or is not. It's time you had a way to defend yourself from these would-be scammers. ZerID was founded with these ideas in mind.
Our mission is simple: to stop phone scams, one validation at a time. Our aim is to reduce phone scams 30% by 2030 compared to 2023. We're committed to building a global network of partners to ensure that our solution is accessible to everyone.
